"On December 14th, the Northwest Falcons held a luncheon at Bahama Breeze Restaurant in Seattle," wrote George Luck. "In the top photo: George Luck, Nels Delisanti, Chuck Diver, Dennis and Linda O'Keefe, Edie Diver and Vic Yoakum. Bottom photo: Bev O'Rourke (partially hidden), Carolyn Luck, George Luck and Nels Delisanti. (Jim O'Rourke was present, not photographed)."
Tony Burshnick gathered DC-'60's Group on 17 January 2012 at the Springfield Golf and Country Club. In the photo, front row, there's Yogi (Yikes! What's a bear doin' on Les' lap?), Les Querry, Ken Alnwick, Tony Burshnick, Norm Haller; Back: Al Johnson, Tom Burke, Bill Hockenberry, George Fries, Bill Carnegie, Mike Loh, Jerry de la Cruz, Bob Badger, Ralph Lalime, Leon Goodson.
"Mike Loh attended the USAFA /Toledo bowl game and was probably the only class member there," said Tony. "Norm Haller travels to Ohio to celebrate his Mother's 100th birthday! Bill Carnegie just returned from attending the Rose Bowl Parade; he has another test for his lymphoma. Ralph Lalime recommends a book by former USAFA history professor Paul Ringenbalk that's about Dean McDermott and all he did for the Academy. Leon and Maryn Goodson are preparing for a summer European trip. Bob Badger bought a coronet and is playing in a local church. Al Johnson finished the guest apartment in his Maine home, so everyone's invited to spend the winter with him and Gale. Our grand daughter lettered in volleyball after her first semester at Indiana University. Finally, we decided to meet April 2nd for our Founders Day Luncheon."
Denis Walsh wrote: "I made it to Champps for the monthly meeting on 11 January 2012, despite all the snow driving down to the Springs (This funky sports restaurant spells its name with two p's). We had a great guest speaker, and eleven members showed up. Wayne Kendall, our leader and social referee, had to leave early, so I kept notes. Photo, front row--Dick Schehr, Jim Glaza, John McCullough, George Pupich; Back--Bruce Mosier, Bill Hodson, Denis Walsh, Elaine Bryant (guest speaker), Wayne Kendall, Fred Porter, Pete Roe, Jock Schwank.
"Jim Glaza led off with the mandatory war story, which involved an RF4C mission wherein their wingman got hosed over in Laos, came back with no hydraulics, stalled out over the runway, ejected (successfully), but the aircraft continued on and wiped out the middle of the base at Udorn, killing 27 people. Jim had a ringside seat, since they had landed first and pulled off to watch.
"This meeting was our first experiment with a guest, and Major Elaine Bryant is the AOC of 24th Squadron, and Fred Porter, who had known her from her days in the Aero Department, persuaded her to give us a better understanding of how the 'system' operates. She did a remarkable job and captivated the audience, who mostly felt the need to tell her how much tougher it was in the old days. One of the more emotional topics was why-the-hell USAFA felt the need to wear fatigues all the time. Major Bryant was wearing fatigues. The AOC tour is three years, but includes a year to get a Masters in Counseling at Maxwell. She is the rare exception, having not done that, while she has had a remarkable and varied career. She is USAFA 2000, married to a USAFA 1998, and has two sons, 4 and 8. She had assignments as Maintenance Officer (F-16 at Hill), assignments at the wind tunnel at Wright-Patterson, then Exec to the Commander of AFMC (too bad that Yates, its first commander, wasn't here!), grad school MS in Aero, instructor at USAFA, AOC. Very impressive, and I would hope that all the AOCs were as sharp as she."
Howie and Judy Bronson moved from Big Bear City, CA to Raleigh, NC. "We moved to North Carolina, much to Howie's dismay," wrote Judy. "It was time to be closer to family, as they are all on the east coast, two sons living in the Raleigh area and the other in New Hampshire. We own a townhouse here. We weren't able to sell the house in Big Bear, and rented it to our carpenter and good friend; Howie misses not being 20 minutes to the nearest ski resort, but hey--we're adapting after 21 years in the mountains, and, even longer in Southern California."
Colonel (Ret) William George Goodyear died 14 Dec 2011 in Atlanta, GA from the effects of cancer, having been transferred from the hospital to a hospice after the disease entered Stage 4. Bill was diagnosed with lung cancer last August. While Bill lay on his deathbed, his daughter Lorelei called Bill's friend Denis Walsh, who was due to arrive that morning, and Bill died within one minute after hearing DL's voice, according to Bill's brother Charles, who was at his bedside. Memorial Service was held on 7 Jan 2012 at 1100 hrs at the Druid Hills Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. A reception at Manuel's Tavern followed the service, a few blocks from the church. Bill had requested a small gathering of classmates following his death, all toasting their favorite alcoholic beverages (Photo: left to right: Jon McClure, Aaron Thrush, Bill Hales, Denis Walsh, Joe Higgins). Condolences to Mrs. Linda Neal Goodyear. Bill's body was cremated, and there are plans to have a ceremony at the USAFA cemetery to honor Bill's ashes during the AFA-Navy game weekend this Fall, details not yet available. (Polaris 1960, Bill's entries: Jacksonville, Florida--original home; Congressional, Cross Country 4, Dodo Staff 2, 1, Entertainment Committee 4, 3). Jon McClure wrote: "I feel honored to have been able to attend Bill's Memorial Service and to have been his classmate and friend." "Bill was a unique and admirable friend; I could not miss the chance to honor his memory." wrote Aaron Thrush
AARP Magazine rated Greenville, SC as the nation's second "Best Place to Live." Many '60 classmates have lived there--Chuck and Edie Diver from 1980-85, and Chuck said "probably four or five classmates lived here after pilot training at Donaldson." Joe and Sue Higgins recently moved here, and, Bill and Barbara Hales live in Greer, minutes from Greenville. What's magical about Greenville? We sent our crack investigative reporter into this Rebel venue; our rapporteur discovered that this was home to Conservative US Senator Jim DeMint, Subaru features Greenville on national TV commercials, Michelin's North American HQ's here, there's a BMW plant, Peace Center, Greenville Symphony, Furman University, it's a crucible for Tea Party formation, and, there is both a Sonic and Dairy Queen. Then, one sunshiny day in downtown Greenville, we found ourselves 'spot-on' its major attraction: Joe Higgins and Bill Hales next to 'Shoeless Joe' Jackson's statue (see photo)--SJJ was born here, there's the Shoeless Joe Jackson Baseball Museum, and Joe owned a liquor store after being banned from baseball in 1921. So, now you know.
