Diane Lynch Smith
Diane Lynch Smith, 76--a resident of Montgomery County, TN--was born on 10 March 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Claudia and Reid Lynch. She died on 11 June 2016 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN following a subdural hematoma / hemorrhagic stroke that occurred on 17 May 2016 at her home near Clarksville, TN.
She is a graduate of Shades Valley High School, Birmingham, AL; and she earned a BS and an MS in Psychology from Auburn University, Auburn, AL. An Air Force Wife for 21 years, she also pursued a career in addictions treatment. She retired in 2001 following 24 years as a Department of The Army civilian employee--serving as the Clinical Director of the in-patient Addiction Rehabilitation Center in Landsthul, Germany, and, most recently, as the Clinical Director of the out-patient Addictions-Treatment Facility at Fort Campbell's Blanchfield Army Community Hospital from 1981 to 2001. She was a member of the Madison Street United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed traveling immensely and has been in all fifty states and on all seven continents--visiting over 70 countries. She was an avid motorcyclist who owned and operated a motorcycle since 1971. She has made many extended trips via motorcycle both in the United States and Europe. She was proud of having ridden her motorcycle on New Year's Day from 1978 through 2016.
Dancing was a major part of her life: In her youth, she trained as a ballet dancer and danced with the Civic Ballet of Birmingham, AL. She attended dance classes whenever feasible, and actively danced socially throughout her entire life. Since moving to Tennessee, she has been a season-ticket holder for and a dedicated patron of The Nashville Ballet since its inception. She was a Founding and active member of the Clarksville Dance Club and an active member of the Let's Dance Club in Nashville--both ballroom dance organizations.
She is survived by her husband, Lt Col J. T. Smith, USAF (Ret); a sister, Savav Dufford of Pulaski, TN; her daughter, Patricia Manley of Lawrenceville, GA; her son, Andrew Hooper of Brandon, FL; a step-daughter, Tracy Tveit of Nashville, TN; a step-daughter, Rocella Rodgers of McHenry, IL; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
