Well, by the time you read this column, the Academy Class of 1974 will be officers, and the Class of 1978 will be cadets. Somehow that makes 1960 sound like a long time ago. I don’t feel that old—do you?
A letter from George FRIES reveals that he has just gotten over a bout with a bleeding ulcer. Surgery was not required, and hopefully things are now okay. (George, I’ll be TDY in Albuquerque this summer and plan to get a personal reply to you in September. Will that be soon enough?)
Good news from Paul VALLERIE! He was Project Officer for the Grand Forks team in “Olympic Arena”, the SAC Missile Competition at Vandenberg, and they won the whole shebang. Paul is being reassigned from his present job as Missile Maintenance Squadron Deputy Commander to Plans Division at HQ SAC. There should be a cause-and-effect relationship there somewhere.
A few bits and pieces of news from here and there: Jim ALEXANDER finished upgrading as a WSO at George (Wild Weasels?) in February and headed for Kadena. Jerry CASKEY finished a tour with the 433rd TFS at Ubon and headed for Torrejon in March. (Jerry, some guys have the best of all possible worlds. I can’t believe Satan’s Angels and Torrejon, too!) John HUHN is Ops Officer of something (I can’t interpret the Navy jargon) at NAS Miramar (Seal, the last time I saw you was on Grant Ave. in the middle of Chinatown in the early ‘60s). John GIFFEN has left his Embassy job in Chad to become an O-Z IP at Hurlburt. (I expect both jobs are a long way from driving Thuds, John). Gordy FLYGARE is an AFIT student at the University of Oklahoma. Mike BUCHEN left SAMSO to navigate 135s for the 4900 Test Group at Kirtland. J.P. BROWNING moved to Arlington, Texas, where he’s flying for Braniff and the Naval Reserve. Jerry MASON is now a Flight Commander at McChord. Ralph MILLER is holding down SAMSO now that Mike BUCHEN is gone. Mac JONES is back at Edwards (as an instructor?) Tom SCHLECHTE moved from Alexandria to Baton Rouge. Finally, Charley HART closed Laredo Air Patch in December and moved on to Reese as a T-38 IP.
Members of our class whose names appeared on the latest secondary zone L/C list include Andy BIANCUR, George ELSEA, Reb GUILLOT, Mike LOVE, George LUCK, Gary SHEETS, and Earl VAN INWEGEN. Denis WALSH was also in the primary zone. Congratulations to you all!
