Dear Classmates, Families and Friends,

During our 60th in September there was a lot of discussion about when and where our next reunion would be. A consensus, in my opinion, was arrived at near the end of our four days together: WHEN? We would not want to wait another five years to meet again, as our rate of mortality and decline in mobility continues to accelerate. Instead we should strive for a reunion every two years, realizing that attendance might be challenged, but if properly planned, would still be attractive. WHERE? There was no one site specifically determined, but ease of travel; e.g., no passports or visas, no bag-dragging or other physical challenges, but a trip that would allow the most of us to enjoy, and not inhibit those more adventurous. After many hours examining virtually unlimited options, I reduced the choices to two that meet the primary goals but are significantly different in time and place to offer a true dichotomy.

The most suggested trip mentioned at the reunion proved to be the most inclusive and attractive among the several catalogs of available river/coastal cruises, Spokane to Portland, June 18-26, 2023 (9 days), on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. PROS: There is a two day pre-trip to Hells Canyon available if interested. The weather is very moderate—ave. hi/low/rain 74/52/3. There is no turbulence on the rivers. American Queen’s reputation and comprehensive amenities are impeccable. NOTE: The price you estimate from the web (see the attachment) does not include our group discount of $600-800 each, depending on the number of reservations, so the web is giving you worst case costs, BUT AIRFARE IS EXTRA. Round trip from Denver to Spokane and return from Portland, for example, this year (economy) would be ~$400 ea. round trip.

An alternative is a round trip cruise out of Miami, Jan 24-31(7 days), to four cities on the Yucatan Peninsula, aboard the Oceania Riveria. Computer pathway attached. PROS: A delightful “getaway” (for those of us up to our butts in snow.) The price is all inclusive, and I do mean ALL! The shore visits are unusual for a Caribbean experience. Minimal interference with the primary tasks of eating, drinking and GETTING TOGETHER! Here a special note must be added. Oceania is famous for its restaurants. I have paid three times as much for lesser fare, and I have been on numerous cruises. The Riveria is a more traditional cruiser with many more amenities than the river. A balcony Veranda Stateroom (B1-B4) costs $2549-$2399 each (brochure price), all-inclusive under Oceania’s “O Life Choice” 2 for 1 program; probably less expensive than the Rivers—again depending on the number going, but I think at least a 10% discount is possible. CONS: More turbulence exposure than the Rivers. Lots more people. Two days shorter than the Rivers. Not so attractive for those living in the Southeast US?

As a long time, frequent world traveler, I can assure you this is a choice between two equally attractive trips.

Before I can negotiate in earnest, lock down staterooms and come back to you with more accurate pricing, I need a headcount. So, PLEASE COMPLETE THE ATTACHED QUESTIONNAIRE and RESPOND BY 31 MAY.

I know our situations are in flex, so I will be sure to confirm cancellation policies before final commitment . With either trip you will work directly with the company’s agent for bookings, air reservations, payment and cancellation once the group is established. I look forward to your response and any comments regarding this and/or future reunions.

Stay well. Jenny and I miss and love you all.

Warmest Regards,
J&J
