Gone But Not Forgotten
Captain Max M. Manning, United States Air Force Academy Class of 1964, was killed in action in the service of his beloved State of Israel while searching for a downed pilot during the Yom Kippur War on 17 October 1973.
Max reported to the Academy from Chicago, IL. While at the Academy, he was a member of the 2nd Cadet Squadron. Upon graduation, Max was assigned to Undergraduate Pilot Training at Randolph AFB, TX. In 1965, he completed helicopter training at Stead AFB, NV, followed by an assignment to the 4756th Drone Squadron at Tyndall AFB, FL.
In 1966, he was a helicopter pilot in the 20th Helicopter Squadron at Udorn AB, Thailand. In 1967, he was a helicopter instructor pilot at Forbes AFB, KS. He separated from the Air Force on 30 June 1969.
Max was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 7 Air Medals and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He had completed Squadron Officers School and Industrial College of the Armed Forces by correspondence.
