Gone But Not Forgotten
Captain Raymond P. Salzarulo, Jr., United States Air Force Academy Class of 1964, was killed on 4 September 1966 in an F-4 Phantom II crash in North Vietnam. He was carried as Missing In Action until 12 March 1973. His remains were returned on 13 September 1990. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
While at the Academy, he was a member of the 15th Cadet Squadron. Upon graduation, Ray was assigned to Undergraduate Pilot Training at Craig AFB, AL. Following F-4 Replacement Training, he reported for duty with the famed 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, where he was serving as an F-4 aircrew member at the time of the crash.
Classmate Tom Webster recalls, "Ray Salzarulo and I received an appointment from the same congressman. Ray's dad was an Army Air Corps Major who was killed in the Pacific. Ray was born nine months after his dad's death. I think these two generations of this family should at least get recognized for their sacrifices. I know Ray was married when he was shot down, but I do not know if he had any children."
