Bill Dickey’s Visit to the Federal Railroad Administration

When I was working on major studies about the railroad industry, Bill Dickey and a team of lawyers working with a major law firm for AT&T on the great de-monopolization case visited me in my office. The team’s interest was to see if they could find out anything from our extensive studies of another government-regulated network industry that could help AT&T’s case. We gave him and his team a full briefing on what we were doing; he was amazed at the breadth of the studies we were conducting on the rail industry. After the business meeting was over, I told him I was in law school and he said: “Let me tell you, you’re having a lot more fun than I am.” I decided that was true and became what one of my friends called “The best kind of lawyer – one who doesn’t practice.”
